Summer is full of long days, exciting trips and lots of fun; but if we’re not intentional, it’s easy to slip into a season of spiritual snooze. School routines pause, schedules get flexible and before we know it, Bible habits can get left behind.
But what if this summer could be your family’s most faith-filled one yet?
With just a little planning and creativity, summer can be packed with spiritual moments woven into your everyday adventures. Whether you’re heading to the beach, staying close to home or just looking for ways to stay connected to God, these ideas will help your family grow closer to Him—and to each other.
Start a Summer Bible Challenge
Create a family goal to read through a book of the Bible together. Choose something kid-friendly like Psalms, Proverbs or the Gospel of Mark. Set a reward for completing it together, maybe an ice cream outing or a family movie night. Need help getting started? Check out these Groundnuts memory verse songs.
Have Faith Talks During Road Trips
Turn car time into conversation time. Ask questions like, “What do you think heaven is like?” or “What’s your favorite Bible story?” You’ll be amazed at how naturally spiritual talks can unfold between destinations.
Go on “Creation Walks”
Take walks or hikes and talk about how everything around you reflects God’s creativity. Let your kids point out animals, plants, clouds, and thank God for His amazing world. Bring Psalm 19:1 to life: “The heavens declare the glory of God.”
Host Backyard Worship Nights
Invite friends or just gather as a family in your backyard. Play worship music, sing songs together, and maybe even have someone share a short devotion. End with s’mores around a fire or under the stars.
Serve Together
Look for a simple way your family can serve this summer—whether it’s bringing cookies to a neighbor, writing cards for seniors, or helping at a local food pantry. Serving teaches kids that faith is active.
Make a “Fruit of the Spirit” Garden
Plant something together and talk about how God wants us to grow in love, joy, peace, patience and more. Use each plant as a reminder of a character trait you’re working on as a family. Have you heard the Groundnuts Fruit of the Spirit song? You’ll memorize them all in less than five minutes!
Have a Worship Playlist for Summer Fun
Make a custom playlist of uplifting worship songs for playtime, road trips or downtime. Music helps keep hearts focused on God—even in the middle of fun.
Create a Summer Prayer Board
Hang a poster board or whiteboard in your kitchen where everyone can write prayer requests or “thank you’s” to God throughout the summer. Pray over them weekly together.
Try Bible-Themed Movie Nights
Watch faith-based or Bible-themed movies together like The Prince of Egypt, The Chosen, or animated Bible stories. Discuss the lessons afterward over popcorn. Groundnuts has some short Bible lesson videos as well! Check them out here.
Celebrate a “Sabbath Saturday”
Pick one Saturday to intentionally slow down—no errands, no screens. Rest, reflect, eat together and talk about God’s blessings. It’s a powerful reminder that rest is part of worship.
Faith and fun can go hand in hand. This summer doesn’t have to be a break from God. It can be a break with God at the center. So go make those memories, laugh hard, and let Jesus be part of every sunny, beautiful moment.
